Introducing the gut microbiome
The gut microbiome is a collection of trillions of bacteria yeasts, fungi, and viruses as unique as our fingerprint. Food is not just something to enjoy, every single piece of food we put into our body acts as a powerful source of information. The ‘data input’ of the food we eat, programmes the health and diversity of our gut bacteria. Diversity is critical, as a variety of different strains of bacteria help to ensure a strong immune defence and reduced risk of disease such as cancer, diabetes, chronic heart disease, autoimmune disease, bowel disease, obesity and much more.

Introducing the gut brain connection
Lack of diversity in our gut microbiome as a result of poor nutrition, chronic use of antibiotics/prescription drugs, alcohol, junk food and sugar can lead to depression anxiety and fatigue. Gut bacteria require an abundance of energy, obtained from a varied and healthy diet, to perform many tasks in the body such as producing hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins and ensuring the smooth running of signals between the nervous system of the gut and the brain. Feeling disconnected and out of control, fatigue, brain fog, forgetfulness, anxiety, and stress are all signs that our gut bacteria is failing due to a lack of supply of energy.
HOW DO PLANTS & TREES PROVIDE MEDICINAL BENEFITS?
Plants and trees draw on thousands of chemicals contained within their structures to protect themselves against heat, stress, disease, and predators. We can harness the power of these plant chemicals to impart incredible health benefits such as immune boosting, DNA stabilising, anti-ageing, cardio protecting and anti-cancer properties. Salicylic acid, a powerful plant chemical contained within Willow bark (Salix alba; the original source of aspirin) and the Sage plant (Salvia officinalis) help the tree/plant to cool itself and regulate its temperature. Metformin, the most the widely prescribed prescription medication for diabetics is derived from the plant Goats rue (Galega officinalis).
Healing the Gut with Plant Medicine
Plant tannins are present in bark, leaves, wood, fruits, and shoots. Through chemical reaction, plant tannins can cross-link the soft proteins of the gut lining to create a “leathering” effect which helps to improve the durability, resilience, and strength of the gut lining. The healing action of the plant tannins helps to reduce risk of a “leaky” gut and prevent a wide range of chronic disease and bowel disturbance.

My Unique Approach ~ 'Weed, Seed & Feed'
At the Lavender Practice, we have developed a 'Weed, Seed & Feed' approach to successfully treat a wide range of gut and digestive issues.
In brief, the 'Weed' stage of this approach eliminates opportunistic bacteria using anti microbial herbs. The 'Seed' phase treats the gut with prescribed, bio active herbal probiotics, specifically tailored to individual requirements to increase the growth of 'friendly' gut bacteria and finally, 'Feed' whereby the gut is further nurtured and nourished with prescribed herbal medicine. After a period of approximately 90 days, a level of long term, sustained healing and repair can be achieved and maintained with dietary and lifestyle changes.
The Weed, Seed & Feed approach can bring about significant changes for conditions including;
- Thrush
- Acid reflux & heartburn
- Abdominal pain, wind & bloating
- Digestive disorders
- Parastic invasion
